The Icelandic horse is a special breed of horse that’s been in Iceland since the country was first settled in the 9th century.
There are about 80,000 Icelandic horses in Iceland, and they have become popular outside of Iceland too, thanks to their easy-going and friendly personalities.
The Icelandic horse is the only breed of horse in the world that can walk or run with five different gaits. Other breeds can generally only perform three or four.
While traveling in Iceland it’s quite common to see a group of horses out in the countryside.
