The Icelandic Horse – Is it a Pony or a Horse?
It’s a horse! It’s just quite small compared to horses in other countries, with an average height of 52-56 inches (132-142 cm). The Icelandic horse is a special breed developed in Iceland.
It’s not uncommon to hear travelers shout “look at the pony!” when they see an Icelandic horse. This is certainly understandable, as they are fairly small.
The Icelandic horse is very isolated and there are strict rules that keep it from mixing with other horse breeds and ensure the horses stay disease-free. It’s forbidden to import horses to Iceland, and any Icelandic horses that leave the country to compete are not allowed to return home.
